KOTA KINABALU:
Villagers have found the body of a 12-year-old boy who went missing after the sampan he was in with three others capsized at a remote village in the Tenom interior district.

A fire and rescue department spokesperson said Melvin Junaidi’s remains were found at 4.45pm today, about 33km from where their sampan flipped over due to strong currents at Sungai Padas in Kampung Kalandos Pangi.

A second person identified as Joseph Sayah, 55, is still missing. Two other passengers managed to swim to the riverbank following the 4pm incident yesterday.

The spokesperson said villagers immediately alerted the authorities after making the discovery.

“The body has been taken to nearby Kampung Binunuk for identification by family members.

“It is believed the boy drowned after being carried away by the strong currents.”

Search efforts are ongoing to find the remaining victim.

The department received a distress call at 4.13pm yesterday but took an hour to get to the scene as they had to board a train to get to the remote location.
