9,000 domestic violence cases since MCO enforced, says Rina

Women, family and community development minister Rina Harun says about half of these were received via the Talian Kasih hotline.

Nearly 5,000 complaints of domestic abuse were reported in the first eight months of this year alone.
KUALA LUMPUR:
A total of 9,015 cases of domestic violence were reported since the movement control order (MCO) was first enforced in March 2020, women, family and community development minister Rina Harun said today.

Citing data from the police, Rina told the Dewan Rakyat 5,260 cases were reported throughout 2020, adding that this was a decline compared with the 5,657 cases reported in 2019.

Rina added that there were 4,110 cases from March 2020 until the end of last year.

“From January to August this year, 4,905 cases of domestic violence were reported,” she said in answering a question from Nizar Zakaria (BN-Parit).

Ongoing initiatives to address the matter include the Talian Kasih hotline at 15999 or by WhatsApp at 019-2615999.

“This service is available 24 hours a day as a single point of contact for all communications to channel complaints and acquire advice.

“It also allows callers to access any form of aid provided by the ministry, including psychosocial services,” she said.

According to Rina, 2,286 complaints were received by Talian Kasih from March to December 2020, followed by 2,248 complaints from January to August this year.
