Lodge report over RM13mil bank transfer or say sorry, Mukhriz tells Sanusi

The former menteri besar says his remarks had fuelled the perception that he was the one behind the bank transfer.

ALOR SETAR:
Mukhriz Mahathir has demanded that Kedah menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor make a police report on an alleged RM13 million transfer to a Canadian bank account from a state-owned company or apologise and retract his remarks on the matter.

This came after Sanusi said the sum was remitted by Kedah Menteri Besar Incorporated during Mukhriz’s time as menteri besar to a Barclays Bank account.

Mukhriz said following Sanusi’s remarks, many had perceived that he was behind the bank transfer.

“He must be responsible with whatever he says. I take the comment seriously.

“Lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission or the police so that a thorough probe can take place.

“Or else, I challenge the MB to say sorry and withdraw his remarks,” he said at a press conference today.

Mukhriz said Sanusi’s claims had no basis and he would consider “follow-up action” based on advice from his lawyers.

“I deny any involvement in this. I’m shocked over these wild allegations, and since it is publicised, it casts a bad image of me, the party I represent and the previous Kedah government I led,” he said.

On another issue raised by Sanusi – a RM1.3 million Hari Raya kuih goodie bag during Mukhriz’s time as menteri besar – Mukhriz said it was “incredulous”.

He said his government was unseated before Hari Raya last year, so there was no likelihood of this happening. He said Sanusi was likely making a reference to a food aid package for 36,000 families in 36 state constituencies at the onset of Covid-19.

Mukhriz said each pack contained RM35 worth of food items, while the packaging cost RM2.60 each.

“You must recall we were thrown out in May 2020, that was before Hari Raya. Hence, it is a bit incredulous that he should claim there was hanky-panky involved in giving out ‘kuih raya’,” he said.

Sanusi had panned Mukhriz for telling him to get good advisers, saying Mukhriz’s advisers had left the state with a RM1.3 million bill for the goodie bag handout where “the bag was more expensive than the kuih raya itself”.

Separately, Mukhriz reminded Sanusi that he could no longer afford to be himself ever since he took over the state.

He said Sanusi must realise that as menteri besar, he represented the state government and the people.

“He is not Sanusi Md Nor. He is the Most Honourable Menteri Besar of Kedah. He is not just your regular Joe.

“He has to be careful with what he says in press conferences. He does not represent himself, but the government he leads,” he said.

At the same conference, Kedah opposition leader Phahrolrazi Mohd Zawawi said that what Sanusi says in public reflected on Kedah and its people as a whole.

He said, hence, Sanusi must be careful with what he says and also heed the Kedah sultan’s advice to all representatives to be open to criticism.
