Green light for inquest into remand detainee Ganapathy’s death

Home affairs minister Hamzah Zainudin says the Selangor prosecution chief has approved the police request.

Cow’s milk vendor A Ganapathy was detained in February and died while being treated in hospital on April 18.
PETALING JAYA:
Police have received approval to hold an inquest into the death of cow’s milk vendor A Ganapathy, who died in hospital while being held in remand, home minister Hamzah Zainudin said.

In a Dewan Rakyat reply to RSN Rayer, MP for Jelutong, he said police had completed their investigation and referred the case to the Selangor prosecution director. The decision on the inquest was received on July 12.

“Following that, police applied on Aug 30 for an inquest to be held at the coroner’s court in Shah Alam,” he said.

Ganapathy was detained on Feb 24 and remanded to assist in investigations into two criminal cases. He was sent to Selayang Hospital to receive treatment during his detention for old wounds.

Police said Ganapathy had necrotising fasciitis and there was no blood flow in his right leg, which led to amputation of the limb. He died while being treated in the intensive care unit of the hospital on April 18.

Hamzah also said that the deaths of security guard Sivabalan Subramaniam, 21-year-old Surendran Shanker and lorry driver Umar Faruq Abdullah were still under investigation.

In reply to Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, who had suggested that retired police officers be reappointed on a contract basis as reinforcements for the Sexual, Women and Child Investigations Unit, he said he would ensure adequate personnel to face any spike in such cases.
