The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Service (Maqis) said the whey powder was brought in to be used in the production of food and drinks for local and export markets.

In a statement, Penang Maqis said it found the importers to have declared different and inaccurate data on the veterinary health certificate from the country of origin.

It said the case was being investigated under Section 13 of the Maqis Act 2011 for offences related to false permit, licence, and certificate, which carries a maximum RM50,000 fine or two years jail or both upon conviction.

Maqis said it vets all agricultural products such as produce, fish, and meats that enter through the country’s borders so as to ensure they are safe for consumption and free from pests and diseases, as well as to ensure they are halal.
