PETALING JAYA:
A British woman who escaped the death penalty in Malaysia for killing her husband in their Langkawi home three years ago has returned to the United Kingdom.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, Samantha Jones, 55, was pictured back in the UK wearing her wedding ring.

Before the trial, she had told the daily: “I loved that man.”

In October 2018, Samantha made headlines after she killed her husband, John Jones, 63, in self-defence.

She later revealed that John drank heavily and physically abused her over the years. The couple had been living in Malaysia since 2004.

On the night of the incident, Samantha claimed John returned drunk to their villa.

Later, she said, he punched and kicked her in the stomach. She grabbed a knife in self-defence and stabbed John when he attacked her again.

She ran to a neighbour to call for help but by the time the ambulance arrived, John had bled to death.

Her lawyer, Sangeet Kaur Deo, had previously said Samantha faced physical abuse and feared John would kill her one day.

Samantha had originally been sentenced to death but was spared the gallows after a judge ruled she was not guilty of murder.

Instead she was ordered to serve a 42-month jail and fined RM10,000 for manslaughter. She had already spent 20 months in detention when the sentence was meted out in August last year.

She was released in early March from a prison in Pokok Sena, Kedah, after a remission for good behaviour and returned to the UK.

A UK foreign office spokesman said they had helped facilitate Samantha’s return to the UK once her deportation from Malaysia had been approved.
