Simply smashing! Chong Wei makes RM243,000 Covid-19 donation

The amount will be used to increase beds for Covid-19 patients in Hospital Bukit Mertajam.

Lee Chong Wei donated the amount after Steven Sim spoke to him about the need for more beds for Covid-19 patients in his hometown of Bukit Mertajam.

Hospital Bukit Mertajam (HBM) will have 32 more beds soon – thanks to former badminton world No 1 Lee Chong Wei who has donated RM243,000 through his foundation to buy the beds.

Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim, who is the state Covid-19 liaison officer, thanked the former national shuttler for the generous offer, saying that the authorities had started work to add the additional beds today.

“I spoke to Datuk Lee a few weeks ago on the need to increase the bed capacity to cater for the increasing Covid-19 patients in the constituency which happens to be his hometown too.

“With this, the construction work began in HBM today,” Sim said in a Facebook post.

He added once work is completed, HBM will have an additional 32 beds which will mainly be used for Covid-19 patients needing early treatment before they are transferred to Hospital Pulau Pinang’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Today, Penang had 1,462 cases, with 17,577 recorded nationwide. Meanwhile, Penang reported an ICU bed usage of 94% as of now.
