Over 2,400 suicides since 2018, 80% were men, says PM

In a written answer to the Dewan Rakyat, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said 807 of them were Chinese, 462 Indians, 362 Malays, while 19 were not classified.

According to Ismail Sabri Yaakob, 27.99% of all those who committed suicide were affected by emotional distress, while 15.87% were due to financial hardships.

Police records show a total of 2,426 suicides were reported since 2018, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob told Parliament.

In a written reply to Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh, who had asked for a breakdown by various demographics, Ismail said 2,030 cases or 83.68% of those who had committed suicide were men.

He added that 1,358 or about 60% of the cases involved those under the age of 40. In terms of racial breakdown, 807 were Chinese, 462 were Indians, 362 were Malays, and 19 were unclassified.

Police investigations found that 27.99% of all those who committed suicide were affected by emotional distress, while 15.87% were due to financial hardships. These were the two leading causes of suicide.

Selangor recorded the most suicides since 2018 with 442 cases, followed by Johor (375), Penang (270), Kuala Lumpur (266), Perak (224), Sarawak (159), Sabah (145), Negeri Sembilan (137), Pahang (122), Kedah (111), Melaka (74), Kelantan (61), Terengganu (36) and Perlis (4).
