In a letter to health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, foreign minister Saifuddin Abdullah and home minister Hamzah Zainudin, he said many had complained of difficulties in attaining the travel pass required for them to leave and return to the country.
“The travel pass and approvals should be offered to them because long periods of separation have dire psychological effects on individuals and families, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.”
His recommendations include coming up with specific guidelines and an advisory for those who wish to be with their partners, spouses, parents, and children, and taking legal action if this relaxation is abused.
He also suggested ensuring those who return after leaving the country to be quarantined and have regular tests that are reported to the authorities.
“Anyone intending to leave the country could also name a guarantor before going overseas.
“I urge the government to pay some serious attention to this issue and to formulate solutions for those facing this predicament,” Syed Saddiq said.
Many NGOs have urged the government to expedite the due process to reunite families that are separated by physical borders.
Many families and couples have been separated from their loved ones in Malaysia for months on end since various travel restrictions were set in place to curb the spread of Covid-19.
