We’ll follow court order on automatic voter registration, says PM

The High Court in Kuching had ordered the government to implement Undi18 amendments by Dec 31.

New voter data such as addresses and constituencies are being looked into in preparation for the implementation of Undi18 by the end of the year.
KUALA LUMPUR:
The government will abide by an order to have automatic registration and lower the age of voters to 18 by Dec 31 as ruled by the Kuching High Court recently, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today.

He added that new voter data such as addresses and constituencies are also being looked into.

According to Ismail, the Election Commission (EC) had previously planned to roll out the automatic registration by September 2022 due to the need to verify data of new voters and also to check on electors aged 90 and above.

Ismail said besides the checks, EC was also amending existing voter regulations, drawing up new standard operating procedures, and a new system and infrastructure for the automatic registration of voters.

He said the commission had also sent officers into the field to ensure the addresses of voters were accurate and according to electoral constituencies.

Ismail said besides engaging the relevant stakeholders, the EC was working on logistics ahead of the 15th general election (GE15).

He said this in a written reply to Hulu Selangor MP June Leow, who had asked for an update on Undi18.

Recently, the High Court in Kuching ordered the government to implement Undi18 amendments by Dec 31, after allowing a legal challenge filed by five Sarawakian youths against the decision by the previous Muhyiddin Yassin administration not to implement the Undi18 amendments by July.

The court also granted an order to quash the federal government’s decision that it can only implement the Undi18 amendments by September 2022.

There are a total of 5.6 million Malaysians who are eligible to vote but have not registered with the EC. Some 1.19 million of them are aged 18 to 20 while the remaining 4.41 million are 21 and above.

The Undi18 bill, officially known as Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2019, was passed in July 2019 and gazetted two months later. The amendment lowers the voting age from 21 to 18 and allows for automatic registration of voters.
