PETALING JAYA:
With Langkawi set to reopen for fully vaccinated visitors from all states on Sept 16, Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng says visitors should be tested for Covid-19 before entering the island.

Recently, tourism minister Nancy Shukri announced that the island will be open to fully vaccinated visitors from all states including those in Phase 1 of the national recovery plan, except those from areas under EMCO lockdown.

She said there would not be any age restrictions but those under 18 must travel with a fully vaccinated guardian.

“Visitors to Langkawi will not need to be tested for Covid-19,” Nancy added.

Commenting on the reopening rules that did not require visitors to be tested, Lim said the move had raised concerns among various parties.

He said with the number of Covid-19 cases in the country still very high, and the presence of more contagious variants, strict SOPs must be put in place.

“With the various new variants, it is not impossible for those who have completed two doses of the vaccination to be infected with Covid-19,” he said, adding that the situation would be riskier with visitors who were asymptomatic.

Lim stressed that the majority of those under the age of 18 had not been vaccinated.

“Those who plan to visit the island should at least do a Covid-19 self-test 48 hours before travelling,” he said.
