103 Delta variant cases detected since Aug 29

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah says Sarawak has over half the Delta cases detected so far.

Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the variants were detected as a result of ongoing genome sequencing carried out at UKM and the tropical infectious diseases research and education centre.

There have been 103 Covid-19 cases of the Delta variant since Aug 29, the health ministry said, bringing the total number of cases to 1,081.

In a statement today, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute is responsible for identifying 44 cases, with the remaining 59 reported by the tropical infectious diseases research and education centre.

Sarawak has over half the Delta cases detected so far, with 696 infections in the state.

This is followed by Selangor (93), Johor (43), Kedah (38), Pahang (38), Penang (32), Kuala Lumpur (25), Melaka (23), Negeri Sembilan (20), Perak (14), Labuan (14), Kelantan (13), Terengganu (12), Sabah (9), Putrajaya (6) and Perlis (5).

There have been 1,304 variants of concern cases to date, adding to the 14 Alpha and 209 Beta cases.

As for variants of interest, Noor Hisham said there have been a total of 20 such cases, comprising the Kappa, Theta and Eta mutations.
