“As part of the government’s transformation, I will study Muhyiddin Yassin’s suggestions to Pakatan Harapan (PH) when he was the prime minister,” he told a press conference here today.

“I will research all the proposals he made, including limiting the prime minister’s tenure of office.”

Apart from proposing a two-term limit on prime ministers, Muhyiddin had also promised that the government would put forth an anti-party hopping bill as well as elevate the status of the opposition leader to that of a senior Cabinet member with the commensurate remuneration and benefits.

He also proposed that all MPs receive the same annual allocations regardless of political affiliation, and called for the number of parliamentary select committees (PSC) to be increased to involve more MPs from the opposition.

The proposals which were made in a live address on Aug 13 were widely seen as an olive branch extended by Muhyiddin to the opposition in a bid to hang on to power until the next elections.

However, PH, as well as other opposition parties, rejected the “insincere offer” and Muhyiddin resigned three days later.

Touching on his other priorities in his newly-appointed post, the Sarawakian said he would look into restoring the constitutional rights of Sabah and Sarawak as agreed upon in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

However, the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) supreme council member admitted he had his work cut out for him. PBB is the main component in Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), the ruling coalition in Sarawak.

“What are the erosion in Sarawak and Sabah rights (under previous governments) that the government can change immediately?

“It mostly involves amendments to the Federal Constitution and laws, and we know that is not easy, nor something that can be achieved in 100 days,” he said, adding that it would also require Cabinet approval.
