PETALING JAYA:
A framework to improve and enforce climate change laws will be among 10 key performance indexes (KPIs) of the environment and water ministry to heed the prime minister’s 100-day achievement targets for all Cabinet ministers.

Its minister, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, said besides new laws, there would be a new carbon trading scheme, a roadmap for plastic sustainability and changes to the National Greenhouse Gases Inventory Centre.

In his address to ministry officials shared with the press today, he said there would also be changes to the water management sector, including the setting of a fair and transparent tariff mechanism.

Tuan Ibrahim said there would be a push for industries to use reclaimed water and, at the same time, ensure all have better access to potable water and sewerage treatment.

He said the ministry would also aim to increase water reserves nationally.

Besides updated climate change laws, there would be more enforcement of pollution laws and a push for critical flood mitigation projects, Tuan Ibrahim said, adding that beachfronts would be restored to fulfill an international obligation to raise awareness on environmental sustainability.

“The prime minister has stressed that all Cabinet members must achieve their KPIs in the first 100 days.

“I take this seriously and it is critical to set the ministry’s direction clearly through the 10 KPIs,” he said.
