KUALA LUMPUR:
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who sued Bersatu’s Anina Saadudin for defamation early this year, has settled the matter without a contest before the Kuala Lumpur High Court today.

Ismail, who was appointed to his post on Aug 21, had demanded an apology and unspecified amount of damages from Anina, a former Langkawi Umno member who joined Bersatu and later left the party.

Ismail’s lawyer Ragunath Kesavan said consent judgment was recorded before judge Mohd Firuz Jaffril during an online proceeding.

“Both have entered into a consent judgment based on the terms of the earlier injunction order. There is no order as to costs or damages,” he said.

Ragunath said that today’s proceeding amounted to a full and final settlement of the defamation suit over Anina’s Facebook postings.

On March 25, Firuz had fixed a trial on Oct 1.

Ismail, who was then the defence minister in Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration, was granted an injunction to order Anina to remove all the postings pending the outcome of the trial.

Anina, who appeared in person, told Firuz she had no objections in the case. She had said she would conduct her defence.

“I cannot afford a lawyer because I am only a housewife,” said Anina, who had also filed her defence.

In the statement of claim, Ismail said Anina had attacked him in his personal capacity 13 times between Feb 5 and March 3.

Ismail, who is also an Umno vice-president, claimed she had ridiculed him and gone overboard in posting statements and videos to damage his reputation among the public.

“The postings had nothing to do with government policies and the plaintiff’s duty as a minister,” said the statement of claim filed on March 5.

It said Anina’s postings, among others, gave the impression that Ismail was “weak, a coward and feminish”.

Ismail also wanted a permanent injunction to restrain Anina from posting her statements and videos on other social media platforms.
