Klang Selatan deputy police chief Mohd Khairi Shafie said an investigation has been opened under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation by anonymous communication.
“We have recorded her statement and are now tracking down the individuals who sent her the package and messages,” he said today.
Khairi said Shakila lodged a report on Aug 30 after receiving a package containing the letter and a fake severed hand at her home in Klang.
She also received a WhatsApp message containing sexual connotations and an attached photograph of an indecent poster with her personal details.
Rights group Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) has condemned the threats and sexual harassment of Shakila.
“Shakila believes the harassment and threats are the result of a video of her talking about the #Lawan rally on July 31, which has gone viral on TikTok.
“Even though she is not a part of SSR, these threats, intimidation and sexual harassments are extreme and unacceptable,” they said.
Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) gender bureau chief Chong Yee Shan said police must ensure that the perpetrators who made the threats against Shakila are brought to justice.
“Attacks against Shakila are a part of the larger issue of gender-based violence.
“Women human rights defenders and activists must be protected, and we need a comprehensive protection and reporting mechanism to improve the situation for them,” she said in a statement.
