In a statement, Kuala Lumpur police Criminal Investigation Department chief Saiful Annuar Yusoff said policemen approached a car at around 5pm last Thursday after seeing a woman taking out items from the vehicle’s boot.
Upon detecting the police’s presence, the man in the driver’s seat immediately reversed the car and hit the woman before attempting to drive off.
Saiful said the police ordered the man to stop and opened fire on him, but he managed to escape.
The 20-year-old woman, who claimed to be the man’s girlfriend, was sent to the hospital for treatment. She suffered minor injuries and was later arrested for further investigation.
Saiful said that a team from the Kuala Lumpur CID branch then arrested the man at Cyberjaya last night.
“Following the arrest, the suspect took the police to several locations, where they found 11 locally made cars that were reported missing around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor between 2019 to 2021,” he said.
“The value of the seizure is estimated at approximately RM130,000.
“Based on initial investigations, we found that the suspect had stolen the cars with the intention of selling the parts on social media,” Saiful said.
He added that a check also found that the man had 17 prior criminal records while his girlfriend had three prior criminal records. Both were also wanted by the police for criminal and drug offences.
Saiful said the case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, which if convicted, is punishable by a prison term of up to 20 years.
The case is also being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code for vehicle theft, which if convicted, is punishable by a prison term of between one to seven years, and a fine.
