
Bernama reported a member of his family saying in a statement that the body was still at the hospital and matters pertaining to the funeral arrangement would be notified later.
Ahmad Sarji was the Chief Secretary from 1990 to 1996 during the Mahathir administration.
Following his retirement he was made chairman of the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia. He also held the chairmanship of Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB).
It was reported on Aug 7 that he had been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital in Cheras due to complications from Covid-19. Two days later it was reported that he was in stable condition.
Meanwhile, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah have expressed their condolences to the family of Ahmad Sarji..
Their Majesties said they were saddened by his passing and hoped that his family would be patient and resolute in facing this situation.
”Their Majesties appreciate and praise highly his service, deeds and sacrifices to the country,” according to a statement posted on Istana Negara’s Facebook.
Ahmad Sarji was born on Sept 16, 1938, in Tapah, Perak and was highly regarded and respected as a public administration figure.
He was also the founder of the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM).
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, in paying tribute to Ahmad Sarji, said he was synonymous with various efforts to uplift the image of the public service.
“He also played a key role in propagation of Islam in the country as chairman of IKIM and the Rulers Council Islamic Affairs Committee.
The current Chief Secretary to the Government, Mohd Zuki Ali, conveyed his condolences to the family of Ahmad Sarji.
He described him as a public service figure who was highly regarded and respected.
“His passing is a great loss to the country…May his soul be blessed by the Almighty and placed with the righteous. Al-Fatihah, ” said Mohd Zuki through a post on his official Facebook page.
