Man who claimed to be ‘Sultan of Melaka’ dies

PETALING JAYA:
A businessman who called himself the “Sultan of Melaka” passed away this morning.

The death of Noor Jan Tuah, who startled the nation with his royal claim more than seven years ago, was shared by well-known activist Abdul Rani Kulup Abdullah on his Facebook account.

Rani, who heads the NGO Pertubuhan Martabat Jalinan Muhibbah Malaysia (MJMM), said Noor Jan, 64, died at Hospital Selayang.

He also extended his condolences to Noor Jan’s family.

Rani’s Facebook post received more than 200 comments, with some social media users expressing surprise over Noor Jan’s death.

Berita Harian reported that Noor Jan was buried at Tanah Perkuburan Islam Raudhatul Sakinah, Taman Batu Muda, in Kuala Lumpur.

Noor Jan had been charged in court for allegedly cheating four individuals into believing he was the Melaka Ruler during a ceremony held on Dec 28, 2013.

The Court of Appeal affirmed his acquittal in January last year.
