Special meeting ends, Rulers leave Istana Negara

The special meeting of the Conference of Rulers ended after nearly two hours today.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah presided over the meeting of the Malay Rulers to discuss the formation of a new government and the appointment of a new prime minister.

Terengganu’s Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin was the first seen to be leaving Istana Negara at 4.22pm.

The Sultans of Kelantan and Johor as well as the Raja of Perlis were not spotted entering the Palace earlier today.

The King is expected to announce the appointment of the new prime minister later today.

The King and his deputy, the Sultan of Perak, had met with party chiefs from PKR, DAP, Amanah, Umno, PAS and Pejuang for two hours on Tuesday.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said the King had called for leaders to work together to address the Covid-19 and economic crises, and to leave behind “politics of the old”.

Sultan Abdullah then granted audiences to the 114 MPs who were said to be backing Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob as interim prime minister. He needs the support of 111 MPs for a simple majority to form the government.

Muhyiddin Yassin had resigned as the prime minister on Monday.
