PETALING JAYA:
Thirty-one participants at a candlelight vigil for Covid-19 victims at Dataran Merdeka were each slapped with a RM2,000 fine, police said.

Dang Wangi police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya said the compound notices were issued after the participants had their statements taken.

In a statement, he said police had opened an investigation under Section 9 of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for failing to notify authorities of the gathering.

The participants were also investigated under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342).

“We would like to advise the public to adhere to SOPs set by the National Security Council meant to contain the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

Last night, the 31 were nabbed for attending the memorial, organised by Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR).

Among them were #Lawan organiser Mohammad Asraf Sharaf, Undi18 co-founder Qyira Yusri and Sarah Irdina Mohamad Ariff, founder of youth-based group Misi Solidariti.

Many of them were seen being roughed up and dragged into Black Marias.

Their arrest sparked an outcry among civil society who called for such intimidation to be halted.
