In a statement, SSR hailed the former prime minister’s resignation as a victory for Malaysians who hold him responsible for the loss of more than 13,000 lives as a result of the government’s failure to curb Covid-19.
“Malaysians, who wanted a government to be led by someone more qualified, fair and honest to steer the country out of the pandemic, have united to put pressure on Muhyiddin,” it said.
Despite calling off the protest, SSR emphasised that the #Lawan movement will go on as the democratic process and the need for checks and balances on the government’s actions must continue.
“We will not hesitate to take action if the new government fails to fulfil its responsibilities to keep the country safe from Covid-19 and political turmoil,” it said.
Previously, SSR announced that it would hold a rally on Aug 21 if Muhyiddin did not step down as prime minister.
Muhyiddin resigned on Monday following the loss of his parliamentary majority. He remains as caretaker prime minister until his successor is appointed.
On July 31, hundreds of protesters clad in black gathered in Kuala Lumpur for the #Lawan protest.
The protest was organised by SSR, which is made up of activists Tharma Pillai, Afiq Adib, Muhammad Alshatri and Qyira Yusri.
SSR had organised smaller protests previously, including the “Black Flag” protest at Dataran Merdeka on July 17 and the vehicle convoy on July 24.
