Cops arrest man for assaulting wife, teenage son

Wangsa Maju district police chief Ashari Abu Samah says a probe into the case was initiated after a Twitter post about domestic violence went viral.

Police say a remand application was made today to keep the man for further questioning.
PETALING JAYA:
Police have detained a man for allegedly assaulting his 44-year-old wife and 14-year-old son at their residence in Taman Melati Utama, in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

According to Wangsa Maju district police chief Ashari Abu Samah, a probe was initiated after a Twitter post about a domestic argument went viral.

“The viral post, as well as the noise from the fight, caused neighbours to come to their residence to ease the situation. Police also went to the scene and took the suspect’s wife and child to the Wangsa Maju district police headquarters (IPD),” he said.

Ashari said upon investigation, police found out that the fight took place at around 11.30am when the suspect scolded and accused his wife of stealing his money.

He added that the wife, who did not want to escalate the situation, kept quiet and this had angered the suspect further, resulting in the man allegedly assaulting her and their son who was trying to come in between them to stop the fight.

“After it was over, the victim’s son uploaded the fight on Twitter and it went viral. This was noticed by the suspect at 1.27pm and caused the suspect to once again beat up the boy,” he said.

Ashari said the wife lodged a police report as she was worried about her safety and that of her family members.

“The suspect has been detained and a remand application was made today. The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code.

“Those who have any queries or information on the case can contact Wangsa Maju IPD at 03-9289 9222, Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-2146 0584/0585 or any nearby police station,” he said.
