Proham hits out at cops over probe of Suhakam commissioners

The officials were only carrying out their duties, says the Society for the Promotion of Human Rights.

Suhakam’s commissioners have been summoned for questioning over their attendance at the #Lawan protest in Kuala Lumpur on July 31.
PETALING JAYA:
The Society for the Promotion of Human Rights (Proham) has criticised the police for calling in Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) commissioners over their attendance at the #Lawan protest in Kuala Lumpur on July 31.

Proham said the commissioners were merely carrying out their duties under the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia Act 1999 in monitoring the public assembly.

“This issue is close to our heart as Proham was established by the former commissioners of Suhakam and the Royal Police Commission,” it said in a statement today.

“Proham urges the government to fulfil what they pledged in their support to continue to strengthen Suhakam.”

Proham said one of the functions of Suhakam was to inquire into complaints regarding infringements of human rights.

“With that, Suhakam should also be able to investigate the police should any human rights violations occur.

“We applaud Suhakam for playing their role in the #Lawan protest. It is in line with the mandates given to them, and their mandates should be respected,” it said.
