Let Monday’s sitting test Muhyiddin’s majority support, says Kit Siang

The DAP veteran says Parliament's lockdown yesterday was a ruse to avert a possible no-confidence vote against the prime minister.

DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang says Muhyiddin Yassin and Takiyuddin Hassan should step down in the wake of Istana Negara’s statement.
PETALING JAYA:
If Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is not prepared to resign, let the first item of parliamentary business on Monday be a test of whether he still has majority support, says DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.

In a statement this morning, the Iskandar Puteri MP called on both Muhyiddin and law minister Takiyuddin Hassan to step down following the emergency ordinances’ fiasco.

He said a perusal of the statements by Istana Negara and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on the issue showed that the Palace’s statement was right and the PMO’s statement was wrong.

This, he said, showed that both Muhyiddin and Takiyuddin had misled Parliament over the announcement on the revocation of the emergency ordinances on July 21.

Lim said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun was also wrong in rejecting motions to debate and annul the emergency proclamation and ordinances.

“Both Muhyiddin and Takiyuddin should be referred to the Dewan Rakyat Committee of Privileges for misleading Parliament. Azhar should also resign as speaker, as clearly he cannot be the chairman of the Dewan Rakyat Committee of Privileges,” he said.

Lim said Parliament’s lockdown yesterday was a ruse by the government to obstruct the sitting and prevent a possible no-confidence vote against Muhyiddin following Istana Negara’s reprimand.

“All these developments stem from the fact that the PN government does not have the majority support of Members of Parliaments and the need to resort to parliamentary ‘games and tricks’ to obviate the parliamentary reality,” he said.

He said the first four days of the special Parliament sitting had “started as a disaster and ended in catastrophe”.

He said the government had mishandled the Covid-19 pandemic, and the national recovery plan had been an instant failure, as the nation was unable to make the transition from Phase 1 to Phase 2 at the end of June as planned.
