The four workers who were rescued suffered light injuries with efforts to rescue the remaining worker still ongoing, says the Selangor fire and rescue department.

Five migrant workers were left trapped under the rubble after a steel scaffolding collapsed at the LRT3 project construction site in Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Klang today.

The Selangor fire and rescue department said they managed to rescue four workers who suffered light injuries while one remained beneath the rubble.

Firemen from two stations were involved in the rescue operation.

The incident occurred at around 2.40pm today opposite the Premiere Hotel in Bandar Bukit Tinggi.

“Updates on the situation will be given from time to time,” the department said.

In a statement issued later in the evening, the contractor, Pembinaan Jaya Zira Sdn Bhd said that one of the workers died, while four were rescued.

The company also said that a stop work order had been issued on the construction site with immediate effect.

“We are working with the fire and rescue department to investigate the root cause of the incident.”

Separately, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd said it has instructed its turnkey contractor to carry out a thorough investigation into the accident and provide a detailed report as well as mitigation measures to ensure such an incident does not recur.

“We will take appropriate action, including to immediately launch our own probe into the matter as well as extending our full cooperation to the authorities to ensure a thorough and independent investigation is carried out,” it said in a statement.

Prasarana owns the LRT Shah Alam project.
