Food delivery services under scrutiny by anti-competition watchdog

Malaysia Competition Commission probes complaints of high fees and commission charged by major players.

The Malaysia Competition Commission says it is talking to food delivery platform providers to prevent possible monopoly abuse.
PETALING JAYA:
The high prices and commission fees imposed by companies offering delivery of food, drinks and parcels have come under the radar of the competition watchdog.

The Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) said it has powers to act against those abusing their dominant position in the market, including a group of major players who were said to have abused their monopoly collectively.

In a statement, MyCC CEO Iskandar Ismail said it was working with the domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry in talking to food and retail businesses that had raised concerns recently on anti-competitive behaviour.

“We have identified several concerns and challenges in the industry, in relation to not only competition but also consumerism. The way forward for us is to actively engage with the food delivery platform providers.

“In this regard, MyCC is seriously looking into every angle from the perspective of the Competition Act 2010, particularly on the conduct of these food delivery platform companies towards food and beverage industry players, riders and consumers and whether it raises any competition concerns,” he said.

Iskandar said MyCC has the power to act on monopolies of any particular business working together to abuse their dominant position in the market, and in preventing fair play among businesses under the Competition Act 2010.

Any company found to have contravened the anti-competition law can be fined up to a maximum of 10% of its worldwide turnover.

He said consumers and businesses may reach out to MyCC over anti-competition misconduct via email at [email protected] or WhatsApp 019-215-2273.
