Allow contract doctors’ strike to go on, says Khaled

PETALING JAYA:
Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin has called on the government to come up with a “middle-ground” solution to the problems of contract doctors who plan to go on strike tomorrow.

In a Facebook post, Khaled said the strike, better known as Hartal Doktor Kontrak, would put a strain on the healthcare system. However, he said it should be allowed to take place, in the name of freedom of speech.

“However, both parties must immediately return to the negotiating table afterwards,” he said.

The government must come up with a comprehensive solution, taking into account the long-term benefits and needs of the healthcare system, especially when facing a pandemic, he added.

“The country is facing a severe health emergency. This problem should not be allowed to continue any longer,” he said.

On the prime minister’s offer that contract doctors would be offered a two-year contract of service and fully sponsored study leave to pursue specialisation, Khaled said the offer should be discussed and considered.

“If it is not enough, then it should be the basis for further negotiations. Certainly, not all demands can be met and not all government offers should be rejected.”

Khaled added that the government should show empathy towards contract doctors, saying: “Doctors and medical practitioners are the frontliners for the country. They should be treated fairly.”

The strike planned for tomorrow is to demand for a fair career path and for contract doctors to be offered the same benefits as medical officers in permanent positions, among others.
