25 Bangladeshi workers fined RM5,000 each for Aidiladha dinner

Twenty-five Bangladeshi construction workers who violated the SOPs by taking part in a Hari Raya Aidiladha dinner at their home in Batu Maung were fined RM5,000 each today or face two months in jail.

The men, aged between 23 and 41, were charged with violating the movement control order in Taman Desa Mutiara at 9pm on Tuesday.

They all pleaded guilty before sessions court judge Norsalha Hamzah.

The charges were laid under Rule 10 (1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2021, under which a person commits an offence by taking part in activities prohibited by the director-general of health.

The offence carries a maximum RM50,000 fine or a maximum six-month jail term.

The court also heard that all the accused were working as construction workers and only 21 had valid identification documents.

Deputy public prosecutor Rais Imran Hamid prosecuted, and 21 of the workers were represented by Muhammad Arif Shaharuddin.
