KUALA LUMPUR:
Former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has claimed trial to another charge of misappropriating RM120,000 in election funds belonging to Bersatu Youth, at the sessions court here today.

He was slapped with one charge under Section 403 of the Penal Code for misusing the party’s funds meant for the 2018 general election (GE14).

If found guilty, Syed Saddiq may face a jail term between six months and five years, whipping and a fine.

Syed Saddiq’s parents, Syed Abdul Rahman Abdullah Al-Sagoff and Sharifah Mahani were also in court today to support their son.

Deputy public prosecutor (DPP) Faridz Gohim Abdullah asked the court to impose RM300,000 bail with one surety.

Lawyer Gobind Singh Deo, however, pointed out the amount sought by the prosecution was higher than the alleged RM120,000 misappropriated.

“We are asking the court to impose RM20,000,” he said.

Sessions court judge Azura Alwi set bail at RM30,000 with one surety.

“The RM30,000 must be paid by today,” she added.

The court also set Sept 10 as the next mention date.

Earlier today, Syed Saddiq claimed trial to a charge under Section 405 of Penal Code for criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM1 million belonging to Bersatu youth, or Armada as it is otherwise known. He is the former Armada chief.

He was ordered to pay RM300,000 bail for the case.
