‘Empty syringe’ jabs may be due to fatigue, says deputy minister

Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali says healthcare workers should inform their superiors so that they can rest.

PETALING JAYA:
Deputy health minister Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali does not deny the possibility that fatigue among vaccination staff could have led to cases of jabs with “empty syringes”.

He urged healthcare workers who were feeling tired to inform their superiors so that they can take a break before resuming work.

Azmi said in his opinion, if healthcare workers felt tired, they should not keep silent as they needed rest.

“If they are tired but keep going, they will be unproductive at work and not at their best,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.

He said at this time, healthcare workers were exhausted after more than a year of being on duty due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Commenting on allegations of empty syringes being used during vaccinations, he said there were three cases still under police investigation.

As for the case at a drive-through vaccination centre in Sungai Petani, the healthcare worker involved has been reprimanded and subject to disciplinary action.

“If the mistake occurred due to fatigue, the healthcare workers should rest. However, if it was intentional, it is a cruel act and action should be taken if it is proven to be true,” he said.

Vaccine administration was a very serious matter as it involved the health and lives of people, he added.
