Foreigners who prayed outside Penang mosque may be deported, says Hamzah

The home minister says stern action will be taken against those who flouted SOPs.

Penang police chief Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said ‘around 200’ foreign nationals had gathered outside the mosque for prayers but a viral video showed the number could be higher.
PETALING JAYA:
Hundreds of foreign nationals who had violated SOPs by having Aidiladha prayers outside a mosque in Penang this morning could be deported, the home minister said.

Hamzah Zainudin warned that stern action would be taken against the offenders.

His comments come in the wake of the apology by Penang police chief, Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain for failing to prevent “around 200” foreign nationals who had gathered outside a mosque in Taman Pelangi, Juru, for prayers.

A video that went viral showed that there could be more than 200 involved and Shuhaily himself visited the scene today to investigate the offence.

In a statement, Hamzah said police at the Penang contingent headquarters and Seberang Perai Tengah headquarters had begun further investigations.

He added that the Penang police chief had been asked to provide a report with detailed explanations immediately on police personnel responsible for monitoring SOP compliance, especially during the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration this year.

“While the investigation is being finalised, the home ministry calls on the public to not issue any statement that touches on religious and racial sensitivities that can threaten public order,” he said.

Penang is currently under Phase 2 of the national recovery plan, with the Penang Islamic Religious Council (MAINPP) limiting Aidiladha prayers to not more than 150 worshippers at state and district mosques, 100 at kariah mosques and 50 at suraus.
