PETALING JAYA:
In the seven years since the July 17 tragedy that claimed the life of MH17’s first officer Ahmad Hakimi Hanapi and nearly 300 others, his sister Husna has not stopped thinking about him.

“My family and I are still in shock and sad about MH17,” she told FMT. “The feeling is still the same as on the day it happened.

“Nothing has changed. We are still trying our best to continue our life as a family.”

Husna, 31, is the eldest in the family, but she said she would always consider Hakimi as the man of the house.

“I will always remember him as a good brother. Although he is the third oldest in the family, he would act as a big brother to all of us. He took care of everything for my parents. We miss him so much.”

She said she would find solace in knowing that Hakimi’s son, Abderrahman, was around and safe with the family. Abderrahman was just seven months old when he lost his father.

“Abderrahman is going to be eight years old this year. He is a very intelligent boy and is doing very well in school,” she said.

“He always asks about his father and what he was like when he was younger. He would also ask simple questions like what was his father’s favourite food. His curiosity is very meaningful to us.”

Husna said Abderrahman’s mother, Asmaa Aljuned, would constantly remind him about Hakimi.

She said Abderrahman was in fact a constant reminder of Hakimi because father and son had the same manner of speaking and smiling. Also, she added, Abderrahman loved roti canai and nasi lemak, just like his father.

Asked about one memory of Hakimi she would always cherish, she fought back tears and said there were too many.

“I can’t pinpoint any. All I can say is he was a very responsible brother and son to our family. He also loved his wife and son so much. Every time he had an off day, he would stay at home and take care of Abderrahman.”

Flight MH17 that was enroute to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam was shot down in eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, killing 283 passengers and 15 crew members.

The victims were from Malaysia, the Netherlands, Australia, Indonesia, Britain, Belgium, Germany, the Philippines, Canada and New Zealand.

An international investigation concluded that a BUK missile that had originally come from the Russian army’s 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade based in the city of Kursk was responsible for the incident.

Last month, Dutch judges overseeing the murder trial of three Russians and a Ukrainian man accused of being responsible for the downing started hearing evidence in a high-security courtroom next to Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport.
