PETALING JAYA:
Although they do not earn the lavish salaries of top executives, about 90 e-hailing riders in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, took it upon themselves to raise funds and contribute to a food bank set up by an MP.

Lim Lip Eng took to Facebook to share a moving story of how a Foodpanda deliveryman approached the food bank yesterday, with the Kepong MP thinking that he was there to ask for aid.

To Lim’s surprise, the rider, who wanted to be known as Chris, told the MP he was there to make a contribution.

The rider said about 90 food deliverymen in Kepong had raised funds to purchase items for the food bank. They contributed more than 15 boxes of canned food to be distributed to the needy.

“Chris also told me they collected a further RM1,000 in cash, which was contributed to a cafe so it can prepare food for the needy. As we spoke, he told me repeatedly to just call him if we needed any kind of help.

Chris about to leave on his motorbike after assuring Lim Lip Eng of support from him and his fellow riders.

“Such an honourable deed by our riders. When many are struggling, they’re willing to lend a helping hand. As far as I know, riders’ incomes have also been affected by the MCO.

“Another rider had shared with me that prior to the MCO, they could easily earn RM100 a day. But during the MCO, it’s tough to even earn RM50,” he said, expressing how moved he was by the deliverymen’s selfless act.

Lim said that as an elected representative, he was embarrassed to note that most of the aid being channelled to the needy came from Malaysians themselves, citing the White Flag movement which has swept across the nation.

“What I’ve been giving to the people in Kepong all this while also came from Malaysians. It’s Malaysians who are really helping other Malaysians in a tough spot.

“I promise to try my best to help those in need. As long as I have the strength to help, I will do my best for the people of Kepong.”

If you require assistance during this trying time, here is a list of some individuals and organisations nationwide helping Malaysians in need.
