Cops probe video urging support for Code Black campaign

A police report had been lodged against the video uploaded by Gigi Han, who introduced himself as Dr Han.

The man known as Dr Han claims in the video that the contract system for doctors could affect the lives of Malaysians and the public healthcare service.
PETALING JAYA:
Bukit Aman has opened investigations into a YouTube video posted on June 30 urging Malaysians to support the Code Black campaign.

In the video, a Gigi Han who introduced himself as Dr Han urged members of the public to stand in solidarity with contract doctors by changing their social media profile pictures to monochrome from July 1 to July 12.

Han also called on them to upload pictures with the hashtags #SaveMYcontractHCW, #CodeBlackMY and #BlackMondayMY on July 12.

In a statement, Bukit Aman criminal investigation department chief Abd Jalil Hassan said a police report had been lodged over the nearly seven-minute long video.

He said Han had claimed that the government’s contract system for doctors could affect the lives of Malaysians and the public healthcare service.

Investigations are being conducted under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code for intent to incite the community into committing an offence against other communities and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for abuse of network services.

“The campaign is named ‘Code Black’ which means an emergency in a hospital due to threats to health workers or a bomb threat in the hospital.

“‘Code Black’ aims to support contract status medical officers who are demanding to be given the same privileges as permanent status medical officers,” Jalil noted.

He advised the public against making statements or speculations that could affect their investigations, and urged netizens to be civil and wise when using their social media platforms.

“Uncompromising action will be taken against any individual who intentionally disrupts the public peace and safety,” he said.

Yesterday, the Malaysian Medical Association criticised the reported investigations against doctors who took part in the Code Black and Black Monday campaigns, saying it was unnecessary.

Today, a group of contract doctors under the health ministry named Gerakan Hartal Doktor Kontrak urged for all forms of harassment by law enforcers against healthcare workers to be stopped immediately.
