Don’t confuse ‘Black Flag’ with ‘Code Black’, MMA tells public

It says MMA’s campaign is in support of contract doctors and not linked to a movement calling for the PM's resignation.

PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has distanced itself from the “Black Flag” movement, which among others calls for Muhyiddin Yassin to resign as prime minister.

Its president, Dr Subramaniam Muniandy, said MMA was concerned that there were those who might confuse the “Black Flag” movement with a campaign the association launched recently.

“We wish to clearly state that only the Code Black and Black Monday campaigns are initiatives by MMA in support of contract doctors.

“We hope that this issue will not be politicised by any groups.”

MMA’s Code Black from July 1 to 12 and Black Monday on July 12 is a campaign to only encourage the people to show their support for the contract doctors.

This includes changing their personal profile picture or institution logo to black or monochrome as well as wearing black to work on July 12 in solidarity with contract doctors.

The 23,000 doctors who have been placed on contracts want the government to absorb them into permanent service so that they enjoy equal remuneration and other perks.

As for the Black Flag campaign, over 34,000 tweets were tagged with the #bendarahitam hashtag on Saturday evening.

Apart from demanding Muhyiddin’s resignation, it also called for Parliament to reconvene and an end to the Emergency.

Federal CID director Abd Jalil Hassan said police had opened an investigation into the campaign for sedition, public mischief and misuse of network facilities for offensive purposes.
