PETALING JAYA:
Police are investigating two individuals over the release of their short film based on a true story of a boy’s experience in police custody with two friends.

Freedom Film Network (FFN) said its co-founder and filmmaker Anna Har and cartoonnist Amin Landak would be questioned at Bukit Aman at 2.30pm today.

They are being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act as well as Sections 400 and 505B of the Penal Code.

In a statement, FFN said it saw the probe as a form of intimidation and harassment of human rights defenders, including artists and storytellers.

“It is disturbing that the police have chosen to investigate artists and activists who raise serious concerns of custodial deaths, torture, abuse and misconduct by the police, instead of addressing acts of violence and harm that have emerged repeatedly, especially in the past few months.

“Why have the authorities chosen to go after the messenger, instead of addressing these urgent messages?” it said, adding that it stood in solidarity with Har and Amin.

The four-minute animated film, titled “Chilli Powder & Thinner”, was released on June 12. It is based on a boy’s testimony that he was tortured while in police custody with two of his friends.

The film shows the three boys being beaten with wooden sticks and rubber hoses, and later being tied up while the police spread chilli powder and paint thinner over their bodies.

It comes after several custodial deaths reported by the media in the last few months.
