King says it again, convene Parliament ASAP

Proceedings need to reconvene according to the Covid-19 guidelines and SOPs set by the government and Parliament, says the Agong.

PETALING JAYA:
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, has reiterated his stand that Parliament needs to reconvene as soon as possible, Istana Negara said today.

The King added that proceedings needed to reconvene according to the guidelines and Covid-19 SOPs set by the government and Parliament.

In a statement, Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said this was to ensure that the emergency proclamation and its ordinances are debated, in accordance with Article 150(3) of the Federal Constitution.

He said the King was also of the view that all Parliamentary Select Committees should resume their meetings to ensure there was transparency, integrity and accountability in government.

This comes after Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun, his deputies Azalina Othman Said and Mohd Rashid Hasnon, as well as Senate president Rais Yatim and his deputy Mohamad Ali Mohamad were summoned to the palace for an audience with the King this morning.

Fadil said the King had expressed his appreciation and gratitude for their commitment and readiness to convene a parliamentary session as soon as possible.

“It should be clarified that the views and calls expressed are the position of the King and Malay Rulers, who act as the constitutional monarchy based on the principle of the supremacy of the Federal Constitution and its rule of law.”
