Govt to spend RM500mil to maintain electricity tariff

Energy and natural resources minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah says Tenaga Nasional and Sabah Electricity have agreed not to increase their rates this year.

PUTRAJAYA:
There will be no increase in electricity tariffs for the rest of 2021 for households and businesses in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, the energy and natural resources minister has announced.

At a virtual press conference today, the minister, Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, said the government had agreed to spend RM493 million to maintain the existing tariffs.

He added that both Tenaga Nasional and Sabah Electricity had agreed not to increase their rates this year.

The move is set to benefit 9.44 million households and businesses that will continue to enjoy electricity rebates of 0.87 sen/kWh (per kilowatt hour).

“On top of the rebates, the government also agreed to give discounts on electricity bills on a targeted basis to domestic and commercial consumers between July and September 2021,” Shamsul said.

He added that more details on the measures, which will apply to consumers in the peninsula and Sabah, will be announced soon by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

According to Shamsul, the government will continue to provide rebates of RM40 on electricity bills for households earning less than RM1,169 a month.

He said, as of May 2021, a total of 282,182 heads of households were entitled to receive this rebate but only 113,745, or 40.31%, who updated their account details enjoyed the benefit.

“I encourage all those who are entitled to receive the rebates to update their account details so they can enjoy the rebates.”
