PETALING JAYA:
Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun has been urged to allow parliamentary select committees to meet immediately.

Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Wong Kah Woh said it was important for the Speaker to do so as the special committee on hybrid Parliament sittings will be meeting on July 5.

He said there was no reason why his and other select committees could not meet, especially since they had not met since the Emergency came into effect.

In a statement, he said committee meetings and proceedings can be conducted physically, with strict SOPs imposed, while waiting for the hybrid mechanism for the Dewan Rakyat sitting to be decided on.

“Too much time has been wasted over the past six months.

“The PAC needs to continue resolving cases started by the previous PAC, go through the latest auditor-general’s report and check on the government’s expenditure in managing the pandemic.

“Parliament has sufficient facilities, with meeting rooms capable of accommodating up to 65 people under normal circumstances and 30, if the SOPs are to be complied with.

“I also want to stress that PAC meetings and proceedings since November 2020 have been subject to health SOPs, with a limit on the number of people present,” he said.
