In a joint statement, the heads of government backbenchers and the opposition said the state assembly was an important platform to discuss issues affecting the people as Selangor fights off the pandemic.
“We uphold the views of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers for Parliament to sit and be reopened as soon as possible to serve as check and balance for the Malaysian government.
“Referring to the Selangor menteri besar’s statement on June 17, we give our full commitment towards the Selangor government’s initiative for the state assembly to reconvene, in line with His Majesty and the Malay Rulers’ views,” they said.
They added that the views of the Malay Rulers and the King should be taken seriously by all parties to ensure that the issue afflicting the nation can be addressed swiftly.
Selangor is among the eight states moving towards reconvening its state assembly, a move seen as defying Perikatan Nasional’s stand at the federal level.
Besides Selangor, the others are Perak, Penang, Melaka, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Perlis and Sabah, all of which have either fixed the dates for the sitting or are awaiting consent from their Rulers and governors.
