Opposition, backbenchers ‘yes’ to Selangor assembly reopening

The heads of government backbenchers and the opposition say the state assembly is important to discuss issues related to the pandemic.

Both sides of the political divide in Selangor are agreeable to having a state assembly sitting as soon as possible.
PETALING JAYA:
Opposition and government assemblymen in Selangor are in support of the state government’s move to reconvene the state assembly soon.

In a joint statement, the heads of government backbenchers and the opposition said the state assembly was an important platform to discuss issues affecting the people as Selangor fights off the pandemic.

“We uphold the views of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers for Parliament to sit and be reopened as soon as possible to serve as check and balance for the Malaysian government.

“Referring to the Selangor menteri besar’s statement on June 17, we give our full commitment towards the Selangor government’s initiative for the state assembly to reconvene, in line with His Majesty and the Malay Rulers’ views,” they said.

They added that the views of the Malay Rulers and the King should be taken seriously by all parties to ensure that the issue afflicting the nation can be addressed swiftly.

Selangor is among the eight states moving towards reconvening its state assembly, a move seen as defying Perikatan Nasional’s stand at the federal level.

Besides Selangor, the others are Perak, Penang, Melaka, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Perlis and Sabah, all of which have either fixed the dates for the sitting or are awaiting consent from their Rulers and governors.
