This comes following complaints from a number of fresh medical graduates that their names were not listed in the list of graduates reporting for housemanship placements.

The graduates were earlier told by MMC that their universities were affected by a gazetting issue and, as such, medical graduates from these universities would not be recognised by the council until the issue had been resolved.

One must be registered with MMC to practise medicine in Malaysia.

The gazetting issue revolves around differences in the name of the medical degree and the name of the university gazetted under the Second Schedule of the Medical Act 1971.

However, in a statement yesterday, MMC said it had written to the health ministry’s legal adviser requesting the ministry to review the Act.

It said the health adviser’s response stated that if the difference in the name of the qualification or institution is due to an editorial error and will not cause confusion, MMC can proceed with the registration of the graduates under Section 12 of the Medical Act 1971 (Amendment 2012) while waiting for the editorial error to be amended and gazetted.

MMC has identified 36 universities involved in such editorial errors so far.

It said the health ministry’s evaluation committee had agreed to allow the provisional registration of the graduates to continue immediately, and correction and gazetting to be carried out.

“Therefore, graduates from these 36 institutions can submit applications for their provisional registration, starting today, through the Medical Register Information and Technical System (MeRITS),” it said.
