The science, technology and innovation minister said Form 5 and 6 students will receive the first dose of Pfizer vaccine starting in mid-July or early August.
He said the vaccination programme will be carried out at their schools.
He was speaking at a joint press conference with Pahang menteri besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail after the Pahang Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force meeting at Wisma Sri Pahang in Kuantan.
Yesterday, the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF) agreed to the education ministry’s proposal that students sitting for major examinations this year be prioritised for vaccination.
Education minister Radzi Jidin said the proposal was made following the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency’s approval of the use of the Pfizer vaccine for children aged 12 and above. Previously, the approval was only for those aged 18 and above.
Khairy said that according to data from the education ministry, there are 357,000 Form Five students and 47,000 teachers who teach Form Five classes nationwide.
“Those who are sitting for public exams really need to get back to school to prepare for the exams,” he said at the virtual press conference.
“We are working out something with the education ministry to focus on exam years first, to inoculate both the teachers and support staff at schools as well as exam-year students.”
