The 61-year-old man, who was crossing a road, died instantly.
Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong said two policemen had tried to stop the Myvi at around 6.40am when they spotted the driver acting suspiciously at the Jalan P Ramlee-Jalan Perak traffic light.
The 46-year-old suspect then made a run for it as the cops gave chase. The suspect then rammed into the victim in front of the Jalan Perak morning market as he was crossing the road.
The two policemen chasing the suspect then fired three shots at the Myvi’s back tyres after the suspect nearly rammed into a policeman while heading towards Jalan Van Praagh.
According to Soffian, another policeman on a motorcycle also fired a shot at the front of the car. He said the suspect still acted aggressively and refused to stop his vehicle.
“The suspect was eventually apprehended and did not suffer from any injuries. He was found to be in possession of three packets of heroin,” he added.
The Myvi driven by the suspect was registered to a car rental company in Bayan Lepas.
The case is being probed under Sections 302 and 186 of the Penal Code and Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960.
