PETALING JAYA:
Being discharged from hospital after a bout of Covid-19 may not mean total recovery for many.

The health ministry said that research on more than a thousand patients showed that 66% of category 4 and 5 Covid-19 patients suffer post-Covid syndromes.

This syndrome, also known as Long Covid, will see those who have recovered from the virus continue to display symptoms for 12 weeks or more.

“Generally, clinical data shows that a majority of Covid-19 patients (in all categories) in the country would fully recover.

“However, there are a handful who suffer from post-Covid syndrome,” health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement.

Long Covid symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, insomnia, cough and anxiety.

For now, Noor Hisham said treatment offered would be based on the symptoms displayed.

Clinical studies would be carried out to better understand and identify the impact of Long Covid, he added.
