The police officers, with the ranks of lance corporal and corporal, from the Kota Samarahan district police headquarters, were on duty at the roadblock at the time.
The 26-year-old woman and her husband from Kampung Semera Ulu, Asajaya, were heading towards the Sarawak General Hospital when she had labour pains while approaching a roadblock at about 11.50pm.
The husband rushed out of the car to seek help and informed police officer Noor Fatihah Azelam, 27, who was on duty at the roadblock of the situation.
Noor Fatihah said she found that the woman had already given birth in the car.
“I helped unwind the umbilical cord that was wrapped around the baby’s neck,” she said, according to a Harian Metro report.
Noor Fatihah said her colleague, Perakson Jennie, 40, helped take care of the baby by wrapping a towel around her to keep her warm.
Samarahan district police chief Sudirman Kram praised the policewomen for their good work.
He said the baby and her mother were later brought to Sarawak General Hospital in an ambulance.
