PJ high-speed car chase ends in 0.3gm drug seizure

Local man who led cops on a chase around several parts of Petaling Jaya has been remanded for three days.

PETALING JAYA:
A high-speed chase which saw several police vehicles in hot pursuit of a car for 20 minutes ended with a local man being arrested with 0.3gm of drugs believed to be heroin.

In a statement, Petaling Jaya police chief Mohamad Fakhruddin Abdul Hamid said that during an inspection on Jalan 18/16 at 6.40pm, police had ordered the driver of the vehicle to stop for a check. However, the car sped off, leading the patrol car to give pursuit.

Several other cars also joined in the pursuit later.

“Police gave chase for about 20 minutes before managing to arrest the driver in front of the Hong Leong Bank in Old Town, Petaling Jaya,” he said, adding that two policemen had also suffered minor injuries while arresting the 34-year-old suspect.

Videos that went viral showed the car chase going through various areas like Taman Datuk Harun, Medan Maju Jaya and Taman Medan before the arrest at PJ Old Town.

Fakhruddin said the suspect refused to cooperate even after the chase ended. When the officers wanted to search the car, he locked the doors, forcing the police to smash the window.

During inspection of the car, they found one straw containing drugs believed to be heroin. A urine test showed that the suspect was positive for morphine.

He added that the suspect had various criminal records and drug abuse.

He said the suspect has been remanded for three days under Section 12 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 186 of the Penal Code.
