In a statement, Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil said the fund reallocation should be done through an emergency ordinance.
“I urge the prime minister to advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to call for an emergency ordinance that allows the RM1 billion to be directly channelled into the disaster fund,” he said.
His proposal came after Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced that all ministers and their deputies will be giving three months’ worth of their salaries to the government’s fight against Covid-19.
“There is talk that all MPs, including those from the opposition parties, should also channel their allowances into the fund. As an MP, I am willing to do this on the condition that Parliament is reconvened immediately,” Fahmi said.
The PKR MP added that the RM1 billion fund would be much larger than the three-month allowances for 220 MPs. The amount is estimated to be RM16.5 million.

He stressed that the checks and balances must be revived, especially during the pandemic.
“If Parliament is convened, many questions can be answered clearly. For example, how much has been spent to develop the AstraZeneca registration website, and why did the website fail at the most critical moment?”
