In a statement, Kevin Shawn Gomez asked if Carlsberg’s products were considered essential items for Malaysians and frontliners.
This comes after an approval letter by the international trade and industry ministry (Miti) was widely shared on social media, showing that Carlsberg was allowed to operate under strict SOPs.
Gomez asked senior minister Azmin Ali to explain his ministry’s decision, and urged the government to “review the approvals issued for ‘non-essential’ industries to operate” during the lockdown.
A Miti spokesman confirmed that the brewery was allowed to operate, as they fell under the beverages sector listed by the National Security Council (MKN).
Yesterday, MKN announced that all businesses and sectors allowed to operate during the lockdown must get approval via a one-stop centre managed by Miti.
It said the centre would issue permission letters once it receives confirmation from the ministries overseeing the relevant sector. The decision came just a day after Ismail said each ministry would issue letters to businesses under its purview.
