The 21-year-old died this week of septic shock and organ failure at Kluang Hospital, less than a month after being moved to the Simpang Renggam Prison.
In a statement, Bar Council president AG Kalidas said they were “dismayed and saddened” to learn of the young man’s death, and said urgent reform is needed to address the custodial deaths that were quickly becoming a “stain on our country”.
“The Malaysian Bar calls for an immediate and thorough independent investigation into Surendran’s death via an inquiry or inquest, as mandated under Section 334 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

“There is much public outrage due to the current state of affairs, which may lead to erosion of public confidence towards the authorities and the government. Something must be done to correct this situation and perception.”
Kalidas also said there was a need for the introduction of a Coroners Act to strengthen the role of coroners in the investigation process.
“The Malaysian Bar wishes to be consulted on this matter, and is ready to assist to ensure that an effective and comprehensive Act is implemented.”
Surendran’s death comes just a month after that of cow’s milk vendor A Ganapathy on April 18 and security guard S Sivabalan on May 20. Both of them died in hospital after being held at the Gombak police station.
